UNICUM 15 Exhibition opens Friday May 15th Slovenia

My work "Armageddon Laced in Fools Gold" is on display in UNICUM – Ceramics Today. Third International Ceramic Triennial UNICUM 2015, Slovenia

Opens on Friday, 15 May, at 7 pm at National Museum of Slovenia Metelkova (Maistrova ulica 1), Ljubljana, Slovenia. The exhibition will be on show till 30 September 2015.

Thanks so much to Clay Arts Vegas for supporting me in exhibiting this guy in Slovenia. What a great bunch to be associated with! I look forward to many years of working with CAV!

2015 MunGyeong Chasabal Festival, Korea

Very Happy to be invited back to Mungyeong Korea for my second chasabal festival! The art of tea and especially the teabowl is celebrated at this event. Ceramic artists from all over the world are invited to showcase their work for the duration of the 10 day event. Here are some images of mine and Leila. I will add more soon.

Process: Adding Volume and Movement to Static Forms with Texture.  By Robert Lawarre.

Viewers will be encouraged to explore surface texture/decoration and its relationship to form. The demo will cover "stretching" the idea of soft slab building vessel forms with armatures and free form. Alteration to these forms will be done with multiple techniques and will incorporate a variety of embellishment methods including impressing with custom texture tools, pinch, coil, sprigging and molding. Attendees can look forward to walking away from this workshop with new skills for building and decorating forms, a stronger ability to explore ideas, and the knowledge to create their own tools.

Awarded the "Silver Prize" at The 5th Taiwan International Gold Teapot Prize!!

Images from the "5th Taiwan International Gold Teapot Prize" at the New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum . I am so thankful to receive the Silver Prize in this competition, especially with the caliber of the teapots selected from all over the world! I was surprised to see my "Deco Tea...Lapped in Red" featured on the 15 foot tall banner as I entered the gallery space. Words escape me...........

Exciting news from the 2014 MunGyeong Chasabal Festival!

I am so thankful for the support of my OHS administration and students sending me off to Korea to participate in this competition! I return to oviedo still in shock from the wonderful experience.

I was hoping to repost an announcement on the awards from 2014 Mungyeong International Chasabal Competition....i still haven't seen the official anouncement. The award ceremony was last Thursday so I think its ok if announce I received "Gold Prize" for my teabowl titled "Down the Drain with the Snake Oil Empire".
I am honored that my work was so well received in Korea! Im looking forward to going back to spend more time in this wonderful cultural exchange. 
The other awards were as follows:
Kikuchi-san (Japan) was awarded the "Silver Prize"
Julia Winter (Germany) was awarded the "Bronze Prize"
Congrats to all the participants! We all were awarded with the best hospitality a person could ask for!

Solo show in Vallauris

Planning is advised but improvisation is a must when new and captivating work is generated in clay. In this workshop you are encouraged to foster the exploration of surface decoration and its relationship to form. Though the focus will be on vessel forms they will be developed to convey sculptural ideas.

Here is the real “dirt” on what you can look forward to:

Using dark stoneware, forms will be made by a utilizing a variety of pinch, slab, traditional and nontraditional methods. I will share my methods to make and use custom patterns, the use of unusual objects as molds, and free form slab techniques. Surface decoration will be addressed in a variety of additive and subtractive methods using slips and texture tools.

Attendees can look forward to walking away from this workshop with new skills for building and decorating forms, a stronger ability to explore ideas, and the knowledge to create their own tools and bisque molds.

All levels though some handbuilding experience will be helpful

"Award of Excellence" Lake Mary Heathrow Festival of the Arts

What a successful weekend. Honored to win the, "Award of Excellence" at the Lake Mary Heathrow Festival of the Arts. 

Day 1 was a Florida wash, literately all my pieces took a bath.  (It rained the festival out.)

Day 2 was amazing! The award was just the start. Fullsail came to the event and did an expose on me. (Very humbling!) Also, I had some sales of my pieces. I couldn't be more excited! I am so grateful for all the wonderful appreciation I recieved. 

I just hung my "Award of Excellence" at the Lake Mary Heathrow Festival of the Arts.

Glazed work for OMA Decorative Arts Show

Update on work for the OMA Decorative Arts Show in Oct-Nov 2013.     Lots of different slab forms from boxes to cylinders and some special teapot forms. Im calling this line my "Deco" series.

Im having to step back a bit to share these images.... because I've been working to much in the studio! ;D

Just wanted to share a few images of the steps used to create my slab box and some of my teapot forms. These will be going to the Orlando Museum of Art in conjunction with the Decorative Arts show.

Examples from my slip decoration demo.

These represent a number of slip decorating techniques from slip trailing, brushing, sponging w/template, and I also threw in a few image transfers from a previous demo.

lone silhouette tray

This was a thrown altered tray from a previous demo. I love to build from one lesson to the next with these type of connections. I brushed on a layer of white slip and spattered the wet slip with a spray of water to create craters in the surface. Then I brushed on some black/blue slip to create a focal point on  the side of the tray. The translucent glaze should pool nice in the craters and the cobalt in the slip will bleed out and streak down the form. 

"Gigo" cup

This is an example of slip trailing where I will tap the cup on the table top and the slip will run down the form. I also used an image transfer of a garbage can directly on the leather hard clay.....wetting the paper first and rubbing it out to get rid of air bubbles. 

"To Bee" cup

On this cup I was sharing the stenciling technique using a store bought template. Black/blue slip was sponged lightly over the stencil lightly as not to run under the stencil. this can also be achieved by cutting your own out of a heavy gauge plastic. The paper stuck to the slip in the upper right is an image transfer of a bee.  

"Jest a cup"

These are just fun for me...hence the jester reference. I'm pretty much a clown  sometimes when do demos but its mostly to show other aspiring craftsman to have fun and play with the materials! I used wet newspaper strips on leather-hard clay to create a mask. Blue slip was applied when the surface was no longer shiny...the water soaked into the clay.....but still damp.  I used a brush to apply the slip but a sponge can be used as well. Each gives a different surface. When the slip is leather hard the paper can be peeled off. A cleanup tool can be used to scrape off the areas where the slip travels under the paper.

Slab and thrown trays

These start off as a textured slab in a slump mold then I measure the outer edge with a string so I know how big to throw the rim. The rim is then stretched by hand to the shape of the slab and then attached. The foot is then thrown or hand-built to match the rim or textured elements.
